Reuse Egg Cartons to Grow Herbs Indoors
Garden
By Emily Lewis

Materials Needed:

  • Egg carton
  • Garden soil
  • Seeds
  • Cookie tray with sides

Step 1: Set up Egg Cartons

Locate a paper-constructed egg carton and fill each opening with garden soil.  Place the egg carton inside of a baking tray with sides to prevent water from leaking.

Step 2: Place a seed in each holder

If your carton holds a dozen eggs, you'll have space for 12 seedings. Using your index finger, gently press one seeding about 1/2 inch into the soil of each egg holder. Cover the seedling with more soil.  Using a water dropper,  squeeze three drops of water over each seedling every three days.

Step 3: Keep indoors or transfer to outdoor garden

After your seeds have grown to a height of 3-4 inches, you can:

1.) Re-plant them into a more permanent container and keep them indoors. If the container has venting at the bottom, you'll want to keep using the cookie tray with sides to prevent leakage during watering.

2.) Transfer your seedlings to an outdoor garden (weather permitting) and plant the entire egg carton in the ground.  Alternatively, you can cut the egg carton into sections and plant each section about six to eight inches apart in your ground soil.  How far apart you plant them will depend on the type of herbs you're growing.

Over time, your paper-constructed egg carton will disintegrate in the ground and become a part of the soil. By that time your plantings may be ready to use.

Bon appetit!
